History of Nazareth and Surrounding Areas
The family of William Penn owned the original holdings of about 5,000 acres. It was known as the Barony of the Rose because the tax on the estate was one red rose. The land was purchased by George Whitefield in 1740. He hoped to build a school and even hired a religious group from Germany to take care of the building. They began construction in May of that year on the Whitefield House and the Gray Cottage. Whitefield was unable to hold on to the property so the Moravians bought it from him in 1741. Nazareth and the surrounding area became a Moravian education center as well as a source of food supplies for nearby Bethlehem. The Nazareth Hall Square was begun in 1755. It later became a boy’s school, Nazareth Hall, from 1759 until 1929. Though more private enterprise began and communal life ended, Nazareth was privately owned by the Moravians until 1858.
